Into The Spider-Verse: Top Spider Characters From The Marvel Universe

The Spider-Verse has now become its own separate and major universe, or multiverse if you will. The potential has been there for decades, dating back as far as 1974, when the first-ever storyline featuring a clone of Peter Parker surfaced in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man.

While the Spider-Verse is not actually based around multiple biological clones of everyone’s beloved wall-crawler, the concept of more than one red and blue-clad crime-fighters has only increased in its depth. With Into the Spider-Verse, and No Way Home displaying this on a large scale, the possibilities, and borders of just how far the Spider-Verse can and will expand are endless.

Today, in celebration of all things Wall-Crawler, we wanted to develop a list of the dopest members of the overall Spider family from the pages of Marvel Comics. Let’s get started!

 

Spider-Punk – Hobie Brown

An anarchist in his corner of the multi-verse, Spider-Punk is Hobie Brown beneath the mask. When not shooting webs, he’s strumming riffs on his guitar. A Spider committed to rebelling against a corrupt authority, led by President Norman Osborn, Spider-Punk shows the fun that can be had with the multiverse in spinning new twists on a classic tale.

Coming from a universe where the system of justice relies on segregational restrictions to uphold its power and authority, Spider-Punk’s mission against corruption is compelling to engage with as watching him rock out. If he sounds cool, you should know a new solo series from Marvel Comics on the way.

It will be an expansion on Hobie Brown’s tenure as a wall-crawler. Which opens a wide array of potential for his journey ahead.

 

Spider-Girl – Anya Corazon

Anya Corazon was like most other young Peurto Rican girls. That was until she was caught in a battle taking place between the Spider Society & Sisterhood of the Wasps. Anya is wounded badly, so Miguel Legar of the Spider Society uses his magical powers to save her. In doing this, he put a spider-shaped tattoo on her that ended up giving her classic spider-like powers. She decides to go fight crime but needs a proper suit to do it.

This leads to the creation of an amazing exoskeleton suit. Due to her sex and the fact that she has similar powers to that of Spider-Man, it only makes sense that she becomes “Spider-Girl.” Embroiled in a world of mystical assassins upon gaining her powers, Anya has a desire to help others. She wants to keep those close to her safe from her superhuman activities while still surviving high school.

As Spider-Girl, her knowledge of the mystical aspects of Spider Totems was an asset against the Inheritors during Spider-Verse. It also helps her take down the Wasps and other foes. We highly recommend checking out her comic book series, as it’s impressively written.

 

Superior Spider-Man – Otto Octavius

Superior Spider-Man was the status quo shake-up that nobody wanted to like at its beginning. Yet like a car crash, we couldn’t look away from it. In hindsight, the run is a monumental double-take on Peter Parker’s tenure as Spider-Man in the mainstream universe.

In a desperate effort to preserve his consciousness in a deteriorating body, Doctor Octavious finds a way to swap minds with Peter Parker. To a horrifying effect, he succeeds. During his stint as Spider-Man, Otto’s operations highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of Spider-Man. However, it also highlighted Peter Parker’s successes & failures too. We simply saw both displayed in different phases or ways in the wall-crawler’s life.

Otto’s cutthroat intellect and focusing skills managed to improve Peter’s science research and simultaneously sparked a new romantic relationship. Meanwhile, his ego and ferocity alienated Parker’s close friends and Spider-Man’s teammates. Only being bested by the Green Goblin’s unpredictable agenda could make Otto confront the reality that accolades aren’t what stops villains. Rather, it is what lies in the heart of the hero.

 

Spider-Man Noir

Set during the 1930s and Great Depression era, the Marvel Noir universe introduced a gritty and more grounded iteration of Peter Parker. This version mixes in a hard-boiled detective version of Parker along with storytelling connecting to the classic Spider-Man mythos.

Spider-Man Noir has made the lateral leap to other media outside comics less than a year from his comic book debut. It is said to largely be due in part to the period piece aspect of the character. Which, simultaneously, challenges and celebrates his traditional, modern-day counterpart.

This comic book series and version of Spidey have since developed a cult following. On top of this, different looks and versions of the character have been used. This is both in the comic book series and in televised or film adaptations of the character in the last decade.

 

Spider-Woman – Jessica Drew

Introduced as a brainwashed HYDRA agent infused with irradiated spider DNA, Jessica Drew began a new thread of Spider-Lore in the Marvel Universe as Spider-Woman. In spite of being what many would call just a female Spider character, she has no real connection to Peter Parker or Spider-Man initially.

However, she has teamed up and been on the same team roster as Spider-Man on several occasions in the comics since her debut. Drew quickly impacted the pages of Marvel Comics due to her roles in S.H.I.E.L.D. & S.W.O.R.D. as an agent of sorts for them. She also plays a critical role in the New Avenger & Secret Invasion story-arcs. Of course, Drew is also a major asset in the Spider-Verse story as they take on The Inheritors.

Jessica differs from Spider-Man in her powers somewhat. She has some powers linking her to real spiders like pheromone manipulation, which she uses to sway men and women alike. This is on top of bio-electric energy, gliding/flying, & venom blasts. The rest are a lot like our friendly neighborhood spider.

Her powers initially came from a spider-blood serum and genetic accelerator, but this origin was removed. Now, the origin of Drew’s powers comes from when she was inside her mother’s womb. Jessica’s mom was his with a laser beam containing DNA traits of numerous spider species.

Her parents were scientists trying to harness the impressive spider adaptive capabilities and find a way to introduce them into the human genome. This is why Drew seems to be stacked with more powers than Spider-Man, and why she was recruited into so many teams or agencies, both government and private alike.

 

Spider-Man 2099 – Miguel O’Hara

The first-ever non-clone, non-Peter Parker to ever have the nerve to call himself Spider-Man came from the future. Miguel O’Hara first made his comic debut in 1992, and just so happened to be Latino. While it was impactful then, it is a choice that has only become more appreciated as time passes.

O’Hara truly fulfills the wonders of what it would be like to web swing in the age of flying highways. Plus, Miguel’s high-tech mostly blue, aggressive-looking suit made an impact immediately on readers. This did not just impact “Spider-Man” as a character, but also Marvel lore too.

In a way, this amazing new Spider-Man showing up on glossy, almost 3D pages made the comic series very difficult to reject. That was in spite of initially having no connection to the original Spidey-Parker mythos! O’Hara was one of the first game-changers to successfully challenge the bounds of what truly qualifies as “Spider-Man.”

Due to the design of his comic series, many assumed it would be hard to put him into a televised or film world. Yet that assumption was ended on Disney’s Ultimate Spider-Man TV Show (2012-2017). We’re also expected to see him show up in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) film from Sony Pictures in late 2022.

 

Scarlet Spider – Ben Reilly

It all started with the slippery slope of Uncle Ben’s first name and Aunt May’s Maiden name. The first clone of Peter Parker was created by Peter’s then obsessive professor, Miles Warren, aka The Jackal. Ben Reilly has since been iconic in his role in the mainstream Spider-Man saga.

He even once again donning the titular name as the main Spider-Man in the current comics following a near (or actual??) fatal injury of Peter Parker. Ben Reilly was the one clone to actually have been believed to be the original Peter Parker, even to Parker himself.

The two have had their bouts over the identity struggle, but always pull in for each other when it really counts. In many ways, they are like brothers. Ben accepted not being Spider-Man or the real Peter Parker. However, he felt the memories of Peter to be his own so much that even bleached his hair blonde. He even moved away to start a new life in an attempt to get past it.

Yet that couldn’t keep him from feeling the responsibility of putting on the Spidey suit to help strangers. Of course, that was all amidst procrastinating to get his life in order. Something the real Peter struggled mightily with. If that doesn’t make him a true Spider-Man, then nothing will.

In later versions, Marvel wanted Ben to stand out on his own to differ from Parker’s Spider-Man. The “Scarlet Spider” name was utilized more, with an all-new suit, and different powers. This included superhuman equilibrium and retractable stingers, which are seemingly metallic.

 

Ghost-Spider – Gwen Stacy

Gwen Stacy’s role in the Spider-Verse goes back decades. She was Peter’s first real girlfriend but sadly died as Parker attempted to save her in a fall. This version of Gwen Stacy was introduced in the comic book prelude to the Spider-Verse event.

Then known as Spider-Gwen,  Stacy is one of the most recent non-Peter Parker Spider-Verse members, and kind of came as a bit of a surprise. A welcome one, however, as what we got as result was an extremely fresh take on overall Marvel lore.

Gwen’s entire legacy before this was arguably just “character motivation.”  For those unfamiliar with the term “Women in Refrigerators,” it refers to the (usually tragic and violent) death of an important or supporting female character for the sake of impacting a male protagonist. That was Gwen’s role here.

Dying was the biggest impact the character of Gwen Stacy had on the Spider-Man lore, and that was sad. Thus, introducing Spider-Gwen was terrific. She boldly flips this notion, with an origin set in an alternate universe after an encounter with a Peter Parker, who has turned himself into the Lizard. This encounter ends with Peter’s death. Bearing the weighted guilt of not being able to save her friend, Gwen opts to never stop saving the lives of others.

Conversely in the mainstream comics, Gwen’s death nearly prompts Peter to stop being a hero altogether. The burden of guilt is a big motivation to almost all Spider-Verse members. Stacy has now been vindicated and with that also meant changing to a proper codename. That led to the introduction of “Ghost-Spider,” who she operates as today.

 

Kid Arachnid/Spider-Man – Miles Morales

Miguel O’Hara glided with a web cape so Miles Morales could swing, electrify, and go not-so stealthily to the near top of this list. Miles happens to be half-Black & half-Hispanic. Miles pushed the bounds of what it truly means to be Spider-Man. He arrived at a time when the Peter Parker (Spider-Man) of his universe was tragically killed in a massive brawl.

When Miles chose to step up to the plate, he was met with a backlash of skepticism both on and off the page. However, just like any Spider should, he was destined to make a name for himself. While he did operate as Spider-Man for a time on his Earth, the events of the Spider-Verse stories led to the Kid Arachnid nickname to separate both Peter’s and Miles’ Spider characters.

Even younger than Peter Parker when he first started, Morales carried more confidence with and without the mask. He often finds his insecurities in living up to the expectations of others. This is a new and fresh angle on balancing the responsibilities of Spider-Man. Usually, it is Peter Parker that puts expectations on himself to succeed.

The story of Miles Morales is about paving one’s own path. Always trying to do the right thing when faced with adversity. This makes him a true, new Spider-Man. He is also a bit different from Parker in terms of powers. He can turn invisible, contains venom blasts, possesses bio-electric energy in his fingers, and is often thought to be more athletic than Parker. 

 

Spider-Man – Peter Parker

It’s hard to beat the original in this case. In fact, several other Spider-Verse members on this list reside within the 616 Universe with Peter Parker. As Spider-Man, Peter Parker constantly battles with balancing his personal life with the life as a hero people can depend on and trust. The result is a long-murky reputation in both areas of his life.

What will always remain is the desire to try again for the sake of good and learning from past mistakes. Parker has been pushed to limits, forcing him to make tough decisions. This has resulted in Peter giving up the moniker of Spider-Man, and even at a time, the identity of “Peter Parker” himself.

For a hero who constantly experiences loss, he finds himself back in the ring with the realization of what he can give to others. In the end, Spider-Man is a necessary component of his identity. He perseveres, rises again, and grows with his weathering experiences.

While put through many tragic events, he never loses sight of his own moral compass. He fights for the notion of helping how he can, and always tries his best. Of course, this is an expectation that even he struggles to live up to. In spite of it all, Peter Parker is the amazing Spider-Man.
