The world of Star Wars is massive, so keeping up with who the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe is can be quite difficult. Of course, Disney also bought up Lucasfilm and thus the entire Star Wars Universe overall. When doing this, they also took things out of the canon universe, making it hard to know what is still true.
Several books or random stories, even some things that were critical to the universe previously, were removed. This meant that we had to keep up with who was still technically part of the universe and who is not. For instance, Jacen Solo was a major figure yet he is no longer canon due to Ben Solo/Kylo-Ren existing in the universe today.
They play the same role, are from the same parents, and take similar paths. In fact, Jacen’s story is almost completely ripped off for Kylo-Ren’s story. Although the stories drift apart slightly, they are related close enough to make you wonder a bit.
With this knowledge, we wanted to write a list regarding the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars universe today. Yet we did not want to completely ignore the expanded universe, even if it’s no longer canon. Most of those on our list are technically still canon while others are not. We’ll be sure to alert you when the non-canon comes up, however.
That said, sit back and enjoy our list and let us know if we missed anyone in the comments below!
Jaina Solo
We love Jaina Solo, which is why it is saddening to know she is no longer canon. However, she likely no longer is due to Rey being in the canonized universe. They pretty much play the same part, yet Solo drifts a bit from Rey. For example, instead of normal force powers, Jaina actually could create random flashes by manipulating molecules in the air. This even allowed her to affect the very air people would breathe around her. She even developed the ability to shatter pretty much anything, including Mandalorian Iron, considered one of the toughest things in the universe.
Of course, Solo was trained by her uncle Luke Skywalker and her aunt Mara Jade Skywalker. She eventually rose the ranks to become a major Jedi Master. She was even one of the top Jedi during the Yuuzhan Vong War. Several did not make it out of this war alive from the Jedi. Yet Jaina not only lived through it but exceeded any expectations upon her, even joining in on frontline assaults.
Due to her immense abilities, Luke eventually named her “the sword of the Jedi.” If she had a lightsaber in her hand, the battle could not be won by anyone but her.
Of course, Jaina has a twin named Jacen Solo (not canon) who eventually turned to the dark side and became Darth Caedus. This brought on a new Galactic Civil War. While Caedus was a major fixture in this war, even being responsible for the death of Mara Jade, Jaina would eventually kill her brother. She did not want to do so, even attempting to stop the battle.
She’d save the universe due to all of this and remained a consistent top Jedi for the Order ever since.
Kyp Durron
Kyp Durron started out working in the space-mines of Kessel. While working here, he came across an old woman named Vima-Da-Boda who told him he had the force within him and that it was quite strong. Due to the mines being under Imperial control, there were eyes everywhere.Boda would teach Durron as much as possible, the Imperials eventually separated them. He’d find his way out of the mines and eventually make his way to the Jedi Academy where he trained under Master Luke Skywalker. While training with Luke, Durron notably had extreme bouts of anger.
Kyp decided to seek out a way to understand this, allowing him to come into contact with the ancient Sith Lord Exar Kun. Kun’s force ghost abilities were a bit unique compared to others. He could actually absorb the body of others for himself, something very few could do.
Durron trained under Kun until it was time for Exar to take him over. However, when Kyp tried to get away, Kun nearly won out if not for the efforts of Luke Skywalker and other Jedi who freed him from Kun’s control.
Now again under Skywalker’s teaching, he also had to learn how to handle his natural Precognition ability. This allowed him to navigate a starship through a black hole cluster, making this skill quite useful. His telekinesis also gave him an edge, especially during the war with Yuuzhan Vong. Here, he used Jedi Shadow Bombs to completely destroy!
He even managed to throw a destroyed freighter at Vong’s invasion crew on Coruscant.
The Sith wanted him to be part of their forces heavily, even wanting him to take over as Darth Vader’s successor. However, he remained a Jedi.
Aayla Secura
Likely one of the most underrated yet greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe is Aayla Secura. She is a Rutian Twi’lek Jedi Master who even served as a General in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Before she became a General, she was the Padawan of Jedi Master Quinlan Vos, which is very key.Like Vos, Secura did not always follow the book and did not mind needing to alter her plans if it meant winning. This was certainly a big thing for her during the Civil War between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. She and her fellow Jedi actually joined the Republic as officers for their military in this period.
During the conflicts of the war, Secura often fought alongside her soldiers around the galaxy. She’d fight in battles raging on Geonosis, Quell, Coruscant, and Felucia to name a few.
She consistently used the force and her abilities with a lightsaber to take down all in her way. This made her, essentially, one of the most successful Jedi Generals in her time. She commanded several Clone Soldiers, all of which respected Secura as a top General and Leader. Sadly, Order 66 resulted in the clones turning on her.
She would be among some of the first deaths of Order 66. This would be witnessed via force vision by Depa Billaba and her apprentice, Caleb Dume. It affected them greatly, yet the two went on to have an impact on the universe….seemingly doing what their fallen brothers and sisters no longer could.
Ki-Adi Mundi
Many tend to forget about the badass General known as Ki-Adi Mundi. First and foremost, he well-liked by the Jedi Council, which ultimately allowed him to do things others could never get away with. Interestingly, one of the biggest things he is connected with is his status as something of a peacemaker. He pushed heavily for his home of Cerea to be free and independent. Which made him also a bit proponent of freedom in other areas as well. This is big to remember, as Mundi had verbal spats with Jedi who felt that certain areas needed to be controlled more. Mundi simply wanted freedom for people to make their own choices.
Mundi was all about peace, but if you pissed him off, he would completely destroy anyone who crossed him.
He was always in the fight, on the front lines. This made him one of the first and last people that his enemies would see in battle. He was completely fearless, which made Mundi a major threat every time he entered a fight.
Sadly, his family died in the Battle of Cerea and it seemed to change him a bit. Mundi did not turn to the side of the dark but rather, he became an even more dedicated Jedi. Thus, he led several attacks on Droid Foundries, making him one of the most feared Jedi in the universe.
Mundi’s wisdom made him a huge asset, allowing him to be a member of the Jedi Council before he was even a Jedi Master. The respect he has among the Jedi is impressive. All of which makes him one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe.
Lord Hoth
Lord Hoth is among the few Jedi Lords in history. Before Sith Lords came to be, the Jedi would often be considered God-like. Sith kept this going out of their own vein, and Jedi went by “Master.” This is why Lord Hoth is one of the few called this but he was technically nothing beyond a Jedi Master.Hoth is mostly known for his fight against the Sith Brotherhood of Darkness. His time in the war against them was as a General for the Army of Light, which was much smaller than what the Brotherhood had but they were incredibly effective in spite of this. Led by Sith Lord Skere Kaan, the Sith Brotherhood was a consistent threat to the universe until Hoth and his Army came along.
The only way to rid the universe of the Brotherhood was to take out Kaan. Lord Hoth knew this and his army took out all in their path in search of Kaan.
The Sith had a secret weapon known as the “Thought Bomb.” It was something of a last resort for them to use, as it was designed to only kill those with force sensitivity. Knowing this, Skere would be committing his own suicide as well as the destruction of the Brotherhood but he’d kill anyone nearby that was force sensitive too.
The only way to ensure they used it was to make them feel they had to. Thus, Lord Hoth went to make this happen but he would be committing his own suicide by doing so. Upon his arrival, the Sith detonated the bomb. While Hoth died in this, so did the Sith. As a result, Hoth removed the Sith who would not be around for a little over 1,000 years.
Shaak Ti
Shaak Ti was a tremendous asset to the Jedi Council and was a major figure in the Star Wars Universe as a Jedi Master. She is most known for her skills as a fighter, tactician, and leader. Overall, Shaak Ti could rarely be fooled and could seemingly see things coming from the enemy most of the time. This is why she was put in charge of a Strike Team by Mace Windu, who was tasked with rescuing three important figures at the time. That being Anakin Skywalker, Queen Amidala, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Without her interference, the three would be executed, thus her role here was quite important.
She would save the three from their early fate, and remain a consistently tough threat for the Sith. After Order 66, in which the clones at the time turned against the Jedi, several Jedi were killed as a result. However, Shaak Ti seemed to know this was coming and managed to escape the ordeal before she could be killed.
Shaak Ti always had a feeling there was an issue with the Clones due to their inhibitor chips. This is likely why she found a way to avoid the clone issue, on top of the fact that she was sent to protect Palpatine. The Jedi were not aware he was Darth Sidious at this point.
Sadly, despite her impressive work and ability to see things coming from the Sith, she never expected a betrayal. Anakin was corrupted by Darth Sidious, causing him to turn to the Darkside and kill various Jedi and Padawan. Thus, it was Anakin Skywalker who killed Shaak Ti as she meditated in the Jedi Temple.
Kit Fisto
Kit Fisto is a cult favorite among Star Wars fans, but most believe he is one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe. He may very well be a cult favorite due to his inclusion in the Prequel Films and especially the Clone Wars animated show. For those who do not know of him, think of him like this.He was not the most beautiful Jedi but he was one of the greatest lightsaber dualists the universe had ever seen. Due to his race, Kit Fisto was capable of being on land and sea and being a capable fighter in both territories. His underwater skill was a major asset to the Jedi during major periods of conflict.
Fisto could enter places from the water and even fight supremely well against unsuspecting droids or Sith that were stationed in the water or near it. He also came within a heartbeat of killing General Grievous if not for the security he had getting in Fisto’s way.
While his underwater fighting made him a Jedi Legend, Kit Fisto was just as big a threat on land too. He was often seen using two lightsabers at once, something very few Jedi could do at the time. In fact, the only people who seemed capable of this were often Sith and not Jedi. Even top saber users in the universe were unable to use more than one at a time.
Despite his impressive abilities, he was sadly ended when he and Mace Windu went to arrest Palpatine. Due to the Sith Lord fighting back, Fisto took the brunt of the punishment allowing Mace to escape for the time being.
Corran Horn
There’s luck and then there’s Corran Horn. It seemed that no man in the history of the universe could ever be as lucky as Horn. The question is, what made the man so lucky in the first place? Many believe his connection to the force was what allowed him this unique ability.Horn trained at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy when he found out about his force sensitivity. People were usually amazed at how Corran could seemingly survive some of the most insane situations.
At one point, during an altercation with an enemy, a deadly blow came his way that he did not see coming. Somehow, it did not kill him as it was found that he could absorb energy. This meant that he could essentially take hard hits that would likely kill others. This is likely what made him so lucky.
He was also a fighter pilot for the Jedi, and a great one too. Horn was similar to his trainer, Luke Skywalker. In that, he seemed to always escape some of the most dangerous situations and still manage to hit his target. Even if he was shot down, his ability to absorb energy allowed him to survive any major crash.
Corran became one of the most feared men in the galaxy, as the Darkside could never find out a useful way to kill the man that he could not survive. In addition to his ability to enter the Valley of Death and exit without a scratch, Horn was also a skilled force user and quite handy with a lightsaber.
All of this puts him on our list of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe.
Rahm Kota
Like others on the list, Rahm Kota was known for his respectable military skills as a General during the Clone Wars. While human, he was born within a war-torn world that was never fully identified. He had to be a survivor from very early periods in his life. In fact, to escape the planet’s internal issues, he had to find clever ways to avoid detection and conflict as early as 10 years old.By 18, however, Jedi Master Mace Windu found him when he was dispatched to Kota’s planet to help bring peace to it. While here, Windu discovered Kota had force sensitivity and invited him to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant where he could be trained to be a Jedi.
Kota managed to become a Jedi Knight and eventually a Jedi Master where he took on his own padawans such as Falon Grey and trained him into Knighthood. Even after an altercation with Darth Vader’s apprentice that left him blinded, Kota found a way to be useful.
He ended up training that very apprentice, Galen Marek, in the ways of the Jedi to turn him against the Darkside.
Kota’s biggest role came during the Clone Wars when he was made General of the Grand Army of the Republic. He was earlier than most when he came to not believing in the clones. Thus, he refused to work with them or lead them. This allowed him to command his own militia comprised of those who chose to work with Kota.
This allowed him and his team to survive Order 66, as no clones were part of the team. He’d take out several imperial targets afterward, consistently becoming a major threat to the Sith the entire time.
An’ya Kuro
The credentials of An’ya Kuro are pretty impressive, making her one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe. She was most active during the Clone Wars as a Jedi Master for the Jedi Order. She became such a mysterious yet respected figure that she earned the name “Dark Woman.”Some may find it to be an insult but Kuro used it as empowerment as everyone feared the wrath of the Dark Woman. She was heavily influential during her initial time with the Jedi Order. She helped to train numerous impressive Jedi for the Order. Sadly, she was unsuccessful in training Aurra Sing within the good side of the force.
She could not get her to see the light as she was dark from the start. Sing became a huge threat to the Jedi, even being known as a top tier slayer of Jedi as a result.
Kuro took this incredibly hard and it forced her to go into exile on the Planet Cophrigin V. Unhappy with herself for failing a student, she felt she was a failure overall. Being unable to help Sing resulted in the death of numerous Jedi after all. Kuro then realized she could still be of use, so she returned to the Jedi Order a bit later. The Force seemed to want her back and she listened.
She’d become a spy for the Jedi where she became a huge thorn in the side of the Sith and Dark Order. This resulted in the Sith seeking to find and end her, causing Kuro to go into hiding again. She survived for quite a long time until Darth Vader found her and sadly ended her.
Starkiller
Starkiller is wildly popular among Star Wars fans, and rightfully so. His story is quite compelling.Galen is the son of two Jedi Knight parents, Kento & Mallie Marek. Darth Vader came to their home one day on the Wookiee homeworld, Kashyyyk, shortly after the Clone Wars ended.
Galen’s mother died shortly after his birth but with the planet being invaded by Sith, Kento had to fight none other than Darth Vader himself. Due to this “Great Jedi Purge,” Galen is now an orphan. Vader sees the Force Power within Galen, then decides to take him and have him become his new apprentice.
This was unique for a Sith to do, due to the Rule of Two. This meant that there must be one Sith Master with one Sith Padawan/Apprentice. The Apprentice only can become a master if he kills his own master, starting the cycle of two over again. Therefore, Galen becoming Vader’s apprentice was an illegal action.
Marek secretly becomes the apprentice of Vader anyway. Vader bestows the codename “Starkiller” on Galen, training him to become a major threat to the universe. Seeing his training come to an end, Vader sends Starkiller out to kill some remaining members of the Jedi.
He finds and nearly ends the Jedi, but Rahm Kota survived the exchange, despite being blinded by Galen. Marek sees the error of his ways and the Sith’s horrible nature and then decides to leave. Kota then becomes his Jedi Master, teaching Galen in the ways of the light.
Galen then seeks out Darth Vader, finding him and nearly putting him down. Vader wins their fight, nearly killing Starkiller. Despite Sidious demanding he kill Galen, Vader refuses. This causes Marek to fight with Sidious where the Dark Lord kills him.
Plo Koon
Jedi Master Plo Koon was known for being one of the most gifted and toughest Jedi around. He was most active during the Clone Wars period and was one of the few to treat the Clones like real people. Mos treated them as what they were, clones. This made him a favorite to work with among the clones, while at the same time, it made him a bit difficult to deal with for some Jedi who disagreed with his beliefs.
Koon is also known for being pretty handy with a lightsaber. He was so notable for his ability with a saber that he’d often be picked for missions that needed at least 1 or 2 top saber fighters. The Jedi Order respected his skills so much that they often had him train people, even some veteran Jedi, in their swordsmanship.
Koon is also called the “Hero of the Republic” for his work in keeping the universe safe.
While Master Plo was gifted with a lightsaber, he was also a very respected pilot that flew starfighters into numerous battles. He never had an issue in this department. This made him a top pick for flying missions as well.
Some believe that Plo Koon could have survived any major issue with Senator Palpatine/Darth Sidious if he ever faced off with him. It is sad to say that he never had the chance, as he was killed before ever doing so. During Order 66, the clones turned on the Jedi.
Considering Plo Koon was a Jedi who often used Clones on his missions, he was around several when the Order was given. Thus, Koon was taken out by the very people he once proudly fought beside.
Mara Jade Skywalker
Known most of her time as simply Mara Jade, she was not always a light force user. In fact, she was actually quite a notable dark force user when we first found out about her. In fact, she was actually known as an Emperor’s Hand. She served as an assassin for Emperor Palpatine, where she was sent to kill rebels or anyone he felt needed to die.Mara Jade became, essentially, the Sith Angel of Death. Once the Emperor was assumed dead, Jade became a smuggler, who worked off and on with General Thrawn and even came in contact with Luke Skywalker.
She eventually grew closer to Luke, even working alongside him for various missions. The two eventually fell in love and eventually were married later on.
Jade then joined the New Jedi Order, becoming a Jedi Master shortly after. The Skywalker’s had children, Cade & Ben Skywalker (no longer canon). She eventually became a trainer, not only for her kids but also for her niece, Jiana Solo (no longer canon) whom she trained into Jedi Knighthood. Mara remained active as a Jedi throughout their training, however.

This allowed her to take down the likes of Supreme Overlord Shimrra Jamaane. She was also active during the Dark Nest Crisis, Swarm War, and the Second Galatic Civil War. By this point, she had become one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe. However, she would not last much longer.
Sadly, she found out her nephew Jacen Solo (no longer canon) was now a Sith and a threat to her family. This made her seek him out where she’d confirm he turned. This caused the two to fight, where Jacen would kill Jade. Thus causing a massive change to the universe.
Ezra Bridger
Ezra Bridger is known most for the Star Wars: Rebels show, but he has been used in some literature for the universe too. During his time as a Jedi, he had major accomplishments. The thing is, while trained to become a Jedi he never really referenced as a Jedi Master despite his clear success rate. He is mostly referred to as a “Freedom Fighter” and “Revolutionary Leader.”He was active during the early rebellion period before the Battle of Yavin, starting in this area in 5 BBY. Kanan Jarrus, who was trained by Master Yoda, helped Ezra become a great Jedi. Seeing his abilities grow quickly, Kanan and the Ghost crew would be capable of a lot due to Ezra’s inclusion on missions.
Ezra’s Lothal Sector message of hope inspired numerous rebel cells to begin working yet again to take down the Empire.
Ezra was essentially an orphan when the Ghost crew came across him in Lothal. But he felt his parents would return, sadly in 4 BBY he found out that they had been murdered. This only made his struggles to stray from the dark side even harder. It nearly happened when he came across a Sith Holocron on the Sith world of Malachor. He strayed and remained a Jedi, however.
With his powers growing even stronger, his leadership roles grew too.
He’d help crewmate Sabine Wren reunite the Mandalorian people, found Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, and had major battles with Grand Admiral Thrawn. Ezra also helped free his people during the Liberation of Lothal.
Sadly, we’re not sure where Ezra nor Thrawn ended up. As the two fought, they were taken into hyperspace by the purrgil. The purrgil creatures travel through space via hyperspeed and even through time. Thus, leaving their whereabouts unknown.
Rey
The major focus of the recent Star Wars films, Rey has been quite impressive since the beginning. Her power in the force seems to be at the same level as major Jedi like Luke Skywalker, who helped to train her. However, Rey has struggled with the light and dark side of the force.Rey seems to have so much power that she cannot control it. This is made obvious with the force tethering, in that she wants to find Kylo-Ren but ends up tethered to him instead.
Her lightsaber abilities have improved drastically since she first was discovered.
Originally from Jakku, Rey was a scavenger who never really understood her strength in the force. It kept on growing and growing when Finn, a stormtrooper gone rogue, came across Rey on her homeworld. The two left Jakku to join the Resistance, led by Princess….now General Leia.
She saught out and found Luke Skywalker to train her, who she hoped would help her understand her power more. She had the ability to trick minds as well as small forms of telekinesis before meeting Luke. However, he helped her hone this. Meanwhile, her run-in with Han Solo helped her become a better pilot and smuggler, if and when she needed these skills.
Rey even picked up tricks from Kylo-Ren, allowing her to meet the dark side of the force and know when and how to use it. This even allowed her to be helpful in killing Emperor Snoke. Her battle with Kylo rages on, but where she will end up next is anyone’s guess.
Overall, despite not reaching the Master level yet, Rey has proven to be among the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe.
Mace Windu
One of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe, Mace Windu certainly is. However, he is perhaps the greatest lightsaber dualist who ever lived. One of the few light force-users to ever use a purple saber, Mace knew how to control every fight he was in.This was seemingly due to the saber form he created, known as Vaapad. His form was successful, yet he was one of the only Jedi who could practice it. The reason for this was that the form asked for one to be as aggressive as possible, going to the nearest possible edge of the dark side without going over. Sadly, many went over.
Windu also had something known as a shatterpoint ability. This gave him the ability to sense where fate could be changed, allowing him to alter his decisions in combat to fit the winning end. This did not give him the ability to know the future completely, however.
His strength in the force, as well as his love for the Jedi as well as the Jedi Order itself, was notable. He was even the Master of the Jedi Order overall until the Battle of Geonosis. Master Yoda then took over for Mace after this period.
Windu remained a consistent figure for years in the Jedi Order, even when he wasn’t in charge.
Eventually, he was sent to track down Senator Palpatine, who was now exposed as Darth Sidious. Upon finding him, Windu fought Sidious well, even taking him down due to his saber abilities. He was incredibly close to killing him in battle too.
However, a recently turned Anakin Skywalker killed Windu before he could kill Sidious.
Quinlan Vos
One of the most unique Jedi of all time, Quinlan Vos was always a consistent thorn in the side of the Sith and Jedi. The reason for this might very well have to do with how he bent the rules. Of course, most feel all is fair in war and Vos used this theory to the max!Captured by the Sith, he was essentially brainwashed into joining the dark side. Count Dooku became his Sith Master, forcing Vos to be his apprentice and do his bidding. This was done alongside his other apprentice, Asajj Ventress. The two seemed to get along well enough at first but eventually grew closer as time went on.
At one point, Dooku decided to kill Vos, but Ventress stepped in the way to save Vos from Dooku’s force lightning. It resulted in her death but Vos managed to take down Dooku in battle but refused to kill him. He’d then decide to rejoin the Jedi.
Known as an expert tracker, athlete, and impressive saber dualist, he could be an asset for any side.
He seemed to avoid numerous near-death experiences, such as Order 66. He took refuge on Kashyyk, keeping himself hidden from those who wished to do him harm or take advantage of his abilities.
Vos was known for his “Retrocognition” ability. This allowed him to touch objects and connect to the memories of the person or people who touched the object in the past. His gifts would serve him well and made him essential to the Jedi.
After the major Jedi Purge, it is claimed that only Quinlan Vos and Luke Skywalker survived from the previous Jedi Order. Today, he is still assumed to be living. His whereabouts, however, are unknown.
Ahsoka Tano
Ahsoka Tano is one of the most popular Star Wars characters in history. She was first used as the padawan to Anakin Skywalker in the Clone Wars TV show and then appeared sporadically in Star Wars: Rebels.Tano is known as an amazing fighter and dualist. She wielded two lightsabers at once in her fights, allowing her to face off with multiple people at once. Tana truly developed into a fierce warrior with her sabers. Not only did she stand toe to toe with skilled assassins like Asajj Ventress but she also did with the 4-saber wielding General Grevious.
Due to learning under Anakin, she was known for breaking the rules or bending them to do what she felt was the right thing to do.
Skywalker may have trained her in his ways but he also trained her to think for herself and not just what the Jedi Order preached. She also learned from Skywalker’s master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, among many others in the Jedi Council. That includes the likes of Mace Windu, Yoda, and many more.
Tano did not like working within the system, especially after she was framed for bombing the Jedi Temple. She was later found innocent, but she felt deep distrust with the Jedi due to this. It caused her to leave and take her own path. Anakin tried to keep her from leaving but was unsuccessful.
She later blamed her departure for her master’s turn to the dark side, despite not being directly responsible.
Overall, Ahsoka managed to stand out on her own and did so with both light and dark side forces. Tano is one of the few that could be a middle-ground force user. Despite her limited time, she still ranks as one of the best Jedi in the Star Wars Universe.
Qui-Gon Jinn
Once we were introduced to Qui-Gon Jinn, we knew him to be among the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe. Let’s be honest, Jinn’s role in everything was pretty massive. He trained Obi-Wan Kenobi, teaching his padawan to become one with the force. Kenobi learned from a wise Jinn, resulting in his own wisdom that we praise him for today.Qui-Gon Jinn also discovered a young Anakin Skywalker, eventually taking him on as a student. He was Skywalker’s initial teacher, training him in how to use his developing force powers. However, he knew he wouldn’t be Skywalker’s only master.
While known as a student of the living force, Jinn knew the value of passing on the knowledge he attained. This is why all who trained with Jinn were better for it.
He was one of the greatest lightsaber dualists who ever lived.
Known as Ataru (Form IV) Master, this deadly style that allowed Jinn to seemingly get ahead of his opponents. It is an aggressive form that requires an opponent to be very agile and athletic.
Skilled in mental manipulation, he could make even some skilled force users do as he pleased. The Hutt Family, often immune to Jedi tricks of the trade, also fell victim to Jinn’s mental skills.
While a skilled saber user, his form was best when used against one opponent at a time but it had a weakness that only skilled fighters could exploit. This is what happened when Jinn faced Darth Maul, as he killed the great Jedi in battle. Knowing how he did it, Jinn appeared to Yoda years later to teach him the secrets of the form he mastered and show where Maul exploited it. This helped Yoda later on in his battles as a result.
Nomi Sunrider
Nomi was never supposed to be a Jedi. In fact, it was her husband who dreamed of being one. He was even studying under a Jedi Master to become one. Sadly, on a trip to the Stenness System, her husband, Andur Sunrider, was ambushed by Bogga the Hutt’s gang members.Apparently, they were after the Adegan Crystals that Nomi and Andur carried. The gang fought with Andur for the crystals, resulting in his death. Due to this, Nomi set out to become a Jedi in honor of her husband. Trained by Jedi Master Thon, she was among the most skilled young Jedi Knights of her time.
Originally working with Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma upon arriving in Onderon to save him, the two brought down a major Freedon Nadd Uprising. Along with other Jedi, the two virtually wiped out all Sith from the planet. Sadly, Ulic eventually turned to the dark side and began to train under Sith Lord Exar Kun and join him in battles.
During the Great Sith War, Nomi saw Ulic kill his own brother Cade in battle. Emotionally distraught seeing this, Nomi showed amazing power as she literally severed Qel-Droma’s connection to the Force. Due to this, she helped to end the war. Qel-Droma eventually turned back to the light side of the force and even became a trainer.
Nomi would be honored by the Jedi for her work, and she would even be sent on numerous missions for them. Nomi became so highly respected within the Jedi Order that she was made the Grand Master. No woman had ever done anything like what Sunrider accomplished in her time, making her one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe.
Anakin Skywalker
There is not much to say about Anakin Skywalker that people do not already know. However, the fact that he is on a top Jedi list may make people wonder. Yes, Anakin did turn to the dark side and betrayed the Jedi to eventually become a Sith Lord known as Darth Vader. However, before doing this he was one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe. What made him great was his skill in the force as well as his creativity to solve problems. He rarely liked going by the book because he knew that, often, what was unwritten was usually the better path to take. This could have very well been why he turned to the dark side so easily.
He could see the flaws in the Jedi Order, a place that even forbids people to have relationships or become married during his time. If he did not violate this law within the Order, we would have never been given the likes of Princess Leia nor Luke Skywalker. Even when he broke the rules he still found a way to make things count for the good.
Anakin was tasked to bring balance to the universe and did just that. Obviously, his original time in the Jedi was successful but the balance was his ultimate destiny. That meant he had to turn in order for Luke to come along as a Jedi to restore things for good.
When his son Luke was about to be killed by Darth Sidious, Vader stepped in the way and prevented Luke’s death while insuring the death of Sidious. It was a sacrifice that allowed him to join the side of the light once more. Yet it once again brought a balance sorely needed to the universe.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi is considered by everyone to be one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe, without question. Heck, some may call him the best ever, period. His ability in the force was immense and due to training with Qui-Gon Jinn, he possessed wisdom very few Jedi at the time had. Kenobi’s skill with a lightsaber was often second to none, allowing him to defeat and kill Darth Maul. (more than once it seems)
He was the Jedi Master that trained both Anakin & Luke Skywalker in the force, both of which never liked to go by the book. Kenobi’s failure with Anakin would not be present when he trained Luke. He knew what to expect and how to avoid the pitfalls that he didn’t have a way to fix beforehand when he trained Luke, however.
He fought alongside Anakin during the Clone Wars and was among the few Jedi to survive Order 66. Realizing that Anakin, now as Darth Vader, may be ordered to kill his children and other Jedi, Kenobi took it upon himself to save them. He would put them in two separate areas, where no one would be able to find them. He’d then watch over them until they were old enough to save the universe.
Sidious and Anakin believed all had perished due to Obi-Wan’s skill in hiding them and himself.
Later on, despite having defeated Anakin in combat years prior, Darth Vader would kill his former mentor and friend. This only allowed Kenobi to become a force ghost that helped Luke whenever he needed it. Mentor and friend, Master and General, Obi-Wan Kenobi is truly one of the greats.
Revan
For those who know about the extended universe, Revan is a massive favorite. He is the only person in the entire Star Wars Universe to be both an impressive Jedi at the top of his craft, as well as THE top Sith. In all honesty, Revan was impossible to really comprehend. He did his own thing and that made him kind of dangerous for both the Jedi & Sith equally.Revan always sought to gain more knowledge about the force, both the light and the dark.
As a Jedi, he participated in the Jedi Civil War, as well as the Mandalorian War. It was here that he created the infamous Revanchist. This was a group of Jedi Knights who felt that the Jedi Order was not getting things done. They felt they could branch off and do their own thing far better, which proved successful.
This led to Revan creating the New Sith Empire, where he hoped to revamp The Republic. Meanwhile, the Emperor wanted to destroy it.
Eventually caught and brainwashed, Revan became a Sith under Emperor Vitiate. He would use both Revan and his friend Malak to do his bidding at this point, pushing for the two to kill and/or capture multiple Jedi.
Malak betrayed his friend during an attack on the Jedi, assuming he killed Revan on a Jedi ship that would escape. Malak crowned himself the Dark Lord of the Sith Empire as a result. The Jedi managed to help Revan, allowing him to escape the brainwashing and become a Jedi once more.
He’d end up returning to take out Malak. However, Revan would be imprisoned for around 300 years by the Emperor to avoid any uprising. Revan truly did everything one could do to become a major Jedi.
Luke Skywalker
The great balance himself, Luke Skywalker ranks as one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe for literally everyone. Like Kenobi, there is a good argument for putting him at the very top of the list.Ultimately, Skywalker was taught greatly in the force by Yoda & Obi-Wan. They managed to also teach him how to use a lightsaber well. This only resulted in Luke becoming a tremendous Jedi that few could battle against.
Luke also proved he could be a terrific pilot as he is credited with destroying the Death Star. While his father Darth Vader did cut his hand off, causing Luke to need a mechanical hand to replace it, he did manage to defeat his father in combat later on. At that point, he refused to kill Vader.
Sidious pressured him to do it, showing no love for his apprentice. He wanted Luke to join him and knew he’d be corrupted if he killed Vader. Refusing even still, Sidious hit him with force lightning nearly killing him. Vader stepped in to stop this and kill Sidious, also killing himself in the process.
Luke did not let that sacrifice go in vain. He ended up opening a school to train new Jedi until, sadly, his nephew Ben slaughtered most of the students and took a few along with him. Skywalker refused to train anyone for years until Rey came along.
Eventually, he seemed to pass on and become one with the force after an altercation with his nephew, Kylo-Ren. Now he is with us in spirit, giving us someone to keep the balance on both sides before passing on. Yet again, proving himself to be “the great balance.”
Yoda
Yoda’s greatness is unquestioned by Star Wars fans and for good reason. He helped to train both Anakin and Luke Skywalker, yet he was also responsible for training the likes of Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, and partly even Obi-Wan Kenobi.Yoda once fought Darth Sidious to a standstill years before he became a major universal threat. The only reason he stopped was due to a vision he had during the fight that showed him training Luke, making him leave to avoid any further issue as a precaution.
His power was immense, allowing him to block force lightning from both Count Dooku and Darth Sidious. This is something no one truly had been able to do beforehand. Yoda even managed to block Darth Bane’s force ghost from hurting him and even helped guide Ezra Bridger in the world between worlds.
Obviously he survived the Great Jedi Purge & Order 66, allowing him to remain alive until it was time to train Luke.
He is most known for his immense wisdom, something that several Jedi leaned on to make their decisions in life. He was even able to sway some Sith Lords with his concepts. Even in pop culture, people to this day still quote Yoda’s teachings.
Upon Windu stepping away from the role, Yoda became the head of the Jedi Order until his passing. He lived just under 1,000 years and in that time he did what very few Jedi ever could. This makes him not just one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe, but to us…THE greatest.
