Jared Leto is a versatile actor, most recently known to the comic world for his role as The Joker in Suicide Squad. On January 28, 2022, Leto makes his debut as Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist dying from a fatal blood disorder. He dedicates himself to curing his illness through the use of experimental bat DNA in Marvel Comics. Yet a similar concept will be done in the Morbius movie.
Also known as “The Living Vampire,” Morbius was created by Gil Kane and Roy Thomas for The Amazing Spider-Man in 1971. In the comics, he was first introduced as a villain. However, the trailer takes another approach and portrays Morbius as an antihero. This is a concept that Sony is rumored to be running with after the wild success of Venom. Of course, Venom has been a noted anti-hero in the comics thus it made sense to make a movie in that direction.
For Morbius, this is a bit odd. However, this movie might change all of that.
What Happens In The Trailer?
In the new trailer dropped by Sony on November 2nd, Morbius is shown as a character who is suffering greatly. He cares for others who have the same illness as him and hopes to find a cure. Morbius travels to a mysterious location, risking his life and exposing himself to a swarm of blood-hungry bats.
He survives his experiment, going from near-death to having powers of super strength, speed, flight, and bat radar. Sadly, he struggles with his new powers, not seeming to know what he truly is. Is he a hero or is he a villain? Morbius even says:
“I’d do anything to save a life, but I don’t know what I’m capable of.”
With his intense need to consume blood and shift into his “vampire” form, Morbius can’t control himself. FBI agents appear to be after him. One is known as Agent Rodriguez, played by Al Madrigal. Furthermore, the characters close to him are concerned especially his fiancee played by Adria Arjona, and his mentor, played by Jared Harris.
The film also stars Matt Smith, who only appears for one scene in the new trailer. Matt Smith is cast as Loxias Crown, a character who, in the comics, gains the same powers as Morbius. Supposedly, his role will be to play the antagonist or true “villain” of the film.
Lastly, the trailer ends with a scene referencing Venom. When a character asks Morbius who he is, he jokes around, “I am Venom. I’m just kidding. Dr. Michael Morbius at your service.”

Tom Hardy’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage came out in October as the sequel film to the 2018 movie, Venom. What is this reference meant to suggest for Morbius’ role in the multiverse?
Which Universe Does The Film Take Place In?In addition to everything referenced above, the trailer also references Venom and all three Spider-Man franchises!
Morbius can be seen with a copy of The Daily Bugle, which refers to The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Black Cat and Rhino. Also, he is shown passing by a poster that seems to have Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man suit on it. Most importantly, Michael Keaton’s Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming makes an appearance.
There is a strong chance that the multiverse will be revealed in the upcoming film, Spider-Man: No Way Home on December 17th. It is likely that Morbius takes place in the world after and will have to deal with the repercussions from this reveal.
(SPOILER ALERT) In the post-credit scene for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, it suggested that both the Venom franchise and Morbius do take place in a separate universe from the MCU.
What Was Playing Morbius Like For Jared Leto?Leto comments that the role was challenging for him because it was so different from anything he had done before. Since the movie is on a larger scale with a high budget, some decisions were stressful to make. He adds how he has a more similar personality to Morbius in comparison to his other roles, as he tends to “hideout in the shadows.”
All in all, Leto described the film directed by Daniel Espinosa, as “a big, fun movie filled with action.” Also, the movie was delayed for more than a year and a half. Certainly, many Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting it. While it was not really anticipated beforehand, this new trailer is certainly making Marvel fans quite eager to meet this new Morbius.
